An erotic television advertisement for hair straighteners that used religious imagery like rosary beads and the phrase: "thy will be done" has been banned in the United Kingdom for being offensive to Christians.

The GHD hair products ad prompted almost two dozen complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), including one from the Archdeacon of Liverpool, Ricky Panter.

The ASA ruled that the advertisement, which also used votive candles and the letter "t" in a font that made it resemble the Cross of Jesus, caused serious offence.

The ad featured lingerie-clad women lying on a bed praying for their "flirty flicks to puncture the heart" of every man they saw.

They finished with "GHD IV thy will be done", with the caption: "GHD. A new religion for hair".

While the ASA acknowledged GHD had been using the "new religion for hair" slogan in marketing campaigns for seven years and did not mock religion, it ruled the TV ad's erotic nature broke television standards.

"We concluded that the eroticised images of the women apparently in prayer, in conjunction with (the) religious symbols ... were likely to cause serious offence, particularly to Christians," it said in Wednesday's judgement.

In a statement, GHD's chief executive Martin Penny criticised the "unduly harsh" ruling.

"We do not believe that the advert is overly erotic or that the choice of font used is offensive to the wider Christian community," he said.

History of the CHI

The CHI straightener is manufactured by a company named Farouk Systems Inc. The owner and chairman of this company is Farouk Shami. His company specializes in making high quality professional hair care products for professionals and consumers alike. They are headquartered in Houston TX. CHI actually stands for 'Catonic Hydration Interlink' which is a registered trademark.

There are 5 different types of the CHI ceramic flat iron available.

1. The Original CHI (1") that operates at a fixed temperature.

2. The new CHI Turbo (1/2", 1" and 2") that has a variable temperature

3. The nano CHI (1" model) that actually sterilizes itself and kills bacteria on the handle

4. The mini CHI, aka, the wee CHI (1/2"). Same as the original CHI but in a 1/2" format.

5. The wet to dry CHI (1"). This iron allows you to style damp hair (must be at least 90% dry).

Of course, there are some limited edition models available too. Namely the pink CHI, the red CHI, the CHI with hearts, the blue CHI and the stars and stripes CHI.

The length and thickness of your hair normally dictates how wide a model you should buy. If you have short hair, then most likely a 1/2" to 1" model will suit you best. If you have longer hair or thick (ethnic) hair, then you will most likely need one from 1" to 2" in size. Lastly, remember that a thinner CHI flat iron is more easy to twist so if you are into doing funky hair styling tricks (flips, waves, etc) then a thinner flat iron may be what you need to buy.

What do you think? GHD Hair Straightener

Most of UK people think ghd hair straighteners so good. The key behind the superior performnace of the ghd was down to 3 main factors.

1.ghd were the first to recognise the use of ceramic in hair straighteners! This simple innovation has of course been subsequently copied by pretty much every manufacturer since. Ceramic is great because it conducts heat effectively but also because it allows the iron to slide through the hair with snagging.

2.ghd’s technology allowed the irons to heat up very quickly indeed. Back in 2000, the iron reached it’s optimium temperature in 10 seconds or so – about 10 times faster than competitor hair straighteners. More importantly the iron maintained temperature. Other models loose heat as soon as the straighteners start to be used (the hair absorbs the heat). It is the maintenance of the tempearture of the iron that is crucial.

3.No hot spots! If you placed a thermometer ( don’t try this at home) at various places on the plate of competitor straighteners you would see that the temprature varies considerably according to where you place it. the ghd straightener has a matrixed heating element embedded in it to ensure even heat distribution through the plate.

That’s only part of the story though. Around that same time, Jennifer Anniston was hugely popular and a huge style icon. She was weraing her hair in a short, sleek, stright bob and guess what she loved ghd hair straighteners. A celberity following built quickly and ghd became one of the best kept secrets to acheiving looks, that had previously only be possible by your hair stylist.

Momentum built, endorsement by world renowned stylists followed and then word of mouth kicked in. ghd have never looked back! Considerble investment in technology and marketing ensured that the reputation of ghd grew and grew.

The range has expanded to encompass a mini styler, ideal for short hair; teh salon styler, great for long thick coarse hair and ghd thermodynamics – an award winning range of hair products to compliment the use of the straighteners.

The original iron is now on it’s fourth incarnation with several improvements made with each new version that is relaesed. The new ghd mark 4 straightener (same size late as the original) has just been launched in limited quantities as part of teh pink and Christmas promotions but will be launched as an invidual item early in 2007.

GIRLS and young women are burning their scalps and suffering permanent hair loss through overuse of ceramic hair straighteners.

A leading Sydney hair expert has issued a health warning about the current fashion for the "ironed" look.

Tony Pearce, director of the National Trichology Services clinic in Rozelle, has warned that many women are using the devices incorrectly.

His warning follows the release of medical research showing that hospital emergency departments have had an increase in women coming in with severe burns from the hair irons, which can reach up to 200 degrees.

There are also concerns that some straighteners have a teflon coating containing a chemical that may cause cancer. The US Environmental Protection Agency recently identified perfluorooctanoic acid, a chemical used in the making of teflon, as possibly cancer-causing.

Ceramic hair straighteners have become increasingly popular in recent years, with top-end brands, such as GHD, costing up to $300.

Mr Pearce, a trichologist specialising in female hair loss, said using straighteners was fine, in moderation.

"The people who are most likely to use them wrongly are young girls who are trying to pull their hair as straight as possible all the time," he said. "This group are also prone to low iron levels in their body so their hair is already weaker and more liable to damage."

Mr Pearce said some people were using the irons far too close to their scalp, causing burning and blistering. Others were pulling their hair so straight they were pulling out follicles around the hairline.

"If you keep doing that over and over again the follicles become so damaged that they don't grow any more … you can see that they have a receding hairline because of the damage."

British researchers reported on the health hazards of hair straighteners for the first time last year with a study published in the Emergency Medicine Journal.
